In the biblical picture, the saved person’s point of initial salvation is only the beginning of his participatory life in the Gospel with our LORD, who bled to buy him back from sin and the wrath to come. His moment of being brought into the kingdom is merely the starting point of his daily, ongoing partaking in the Gospel – the death, burial, and resurrection life of Christ. When taken up by believers, the cross is an instrument of death to the sinful nature and defiling sins of the body, that the power of God might triumph in magnificent victory in their daily personal lives (Mk. 7:20-23; 2 Cor. 4:10-12, 14; Gal. 2:20; 6:14).

This great book focuses in on the most important message to the church today, the cross of Christ and the daily cross for all who will know and follow the LORD. There will never be revival until believers yield and die to self. In these pages, Todd Tomasella shows us the way of the cross, a way which he understands and acknowledges that he himself is daily learning.
One godly reformer referred to the Christian life as a daily baptism, or ‘dying upward.’ The flesh begins with birth; spirit begins with death. This applies daily, too. The daily door to the Spirit walk is our death with Christ - our daily dying to self (Rom 8:36; 12:1-2; 1 Cor. 15:31, 36; 2 Cor. 4:10-12). Daily dying is gain (we gain more of Christ). In the last days, men will be lovers of their own selves. We are to hate our old self, not love him (Jn. 12:25). In Galatians 2:20, the Greek verb is in the perfect tense: ‘I have been and continue to be crucified with Christ.’ The word ‘planted’ in Romans 6:5 is also in the perfect tense. The Valley of Achor (troubling or horror) is a door of hope (Hosea 2:14-17: Josh 7:24, 26; Isa. 65:10). To be brought low as in Psalm 116, is to die to self.
The cross is in the Spirit. It is through the Spirit that we are able to MORTIFY (crucify) the sinful deeds of the body (Rom. 8:13; Col. 3:5). Those who belong to Christ have CRUCIFIED the lusts of the flesh (Gal. 5:24).
